    Disable the real-time protection of Windows Defender

    Hi

    In Windows 10 v1511, I noticed that if I disable the real-time protection of Windows Defender, when I reboot the system, this protection comes back on automatically. Why?

    So, how do I prevent this?

    Thanks

    Bye

    Why:
    Disable the real-time protection of Windows Defender-wd2capture.png

    You can only keep windows Defender off by installing another AV with realtime protection.

    Sorry but if someone does not want the real-time protection of Windows Defender without installing another antivirus, how he should do?

    Thanks

    You can't turn it off permanently. If you use another AV it will turn it off as part of the installation process. Some sort of real time protection must be used.

    You can kill Defender via policy editor if you want to be sure its disabled and stays disabled. Open gpedit.smc, navigate to and Enable;
    Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Defender/Turn Off Windows Defender

    Why do you want to do that by the way? Windows Defender is low on resources and it's quite dangerous to go "without real-time protection" nowadays.

    There was a time when I thought passive file scanning was good enough, and at one time that was true. But not anymore. Modern malware has become very sophisticated and well aware of how file scanning works, and how it can be evaded. Many viruses can only be detected in a running computer with real time protection. Windows Defender, as are all popular AV products, are well known to malware authors. If real time scanning can be shut down manually there would seem little reason why malware couldn't do it as well. AV products must take active measures to defend itself from such action.

    Turning off real time protection leaves your computer vulnerable to many types of malware. I am sure there have been many cases where real time protection has been turned off, and then forgotten. That is why this action is not permanent.

    Security always has it's price.
