Did windows defender perform auto update and auto scan daily? Since i noticed it is quite often that the definition is outdated and i need to updated it manually.

As long as automatic windows update is working, windows defender will auto update. It's part of windows update.
Do you by chance have your updates set to only notify you & not automatically update/install? If so, then you would have to either set them to automatically update & install, or you would have to manually update defender. I have mine set to notify only & I run a manual update on Defender at least once a day if not more.
