    Unfamiliar with that process but there is nothing outstanding to see.I still have the gut feeling that desktop with nothing on has something to do with it.
    Just spent over one hour on the phone to HP and one of their technical chaps took control of my new computer.The reason for the loss of the icons was due to me downloading powershell to enable me to have a windows 7 type start menu.Everything is now working fine and I thank you for the time and effort you have expended on my behalf.

    Glad you got it sorted. Do you remember the name of the program by chance in case this problem occurs with someone else's OS down the road?

    That problem was solved but this morning when I switched on all I see is a black screen so have arranged to return it for a refund,end of problems.Could you suggest a replacement model,would prefer a Toshiba same as my main laptop.
