But AVG is one of the most popular free ones, should get its own entry

Yes I know, using it on both, W8.1 and W10TP. Got rid of Avast since their recent screw ups.

I have switched to Panda Security from today, I like their Rescue kit and advanced feature of Cloud cleaning.

Avira works quite well this side, so I guess I'll be sticking to Avira.

    AVG 2015 FREE!

It keeps me and my hundreds of customers completely free of viruses, and we all love the daily updates and scans without user intervention. It also checks email, incoming and outgoing, and examines every file that's opened in the PC.

But, no one program can keep any PC 100% free of malware. It takes a package of Security Software, from different vendors, looking for different things, to really be safe.

Just some of the other programs I use:
Spybot Search & Destroy, ver 1.xxxx
    Spyware Blaster
    Super Anti-Spyware
    Malware Bytes
    Trojan Hunter (not free)

    Be safe!

Why would you want it -- Windows has all the AV stuff already built in - and on kernels regularly being changed there's about 100% probability this stuff won't work anyway in the next release.

AV software from 3rd parties has passed its sell by date --totally un-necessary and redundant these days -- in any case these programs aren't much use against PUPS (Potentially Unwanted Programs) which can pose as 100% legitimate windows programs.

Safer by far - USE COMMON SENSE when visiting websites / downloading stuff / accessing email. Use Firewall to block all ports and access to Internet services by anything other than clearly defined applications and keep Windows defender up to date.

When downloading avoid those forests of green arrows which usually hide the REAL download you want - so careful before you click and UNCHECK all special offers / toolbars / registry cleaners etc. Also NEVER use 3rd party "installers" unless you know exactly where they come from.

All the other packages just load the system AND ARE A WASTE OF TIME. (Windows 7 still needs AV software but from W8 onwards the built in system is fine).

These days also Scamming is far more profitable and no software can prevent you being scammed if you don't take care. I've said it before and I'll say it again - the best protection is YOU THE USER.

Malware is also misunderstood concept - malware might pose as a perfectly legitimate program or a PUP. what does the AV software do then - it hasn't a cat's chance in hell of finding it until it's probably too late anyway. !!! By taking CARE and ensuring the Firewall is properly configured this stuff won't get on to your system in the first place.

    Cheers

Because they may have had MS Defender allow malware to install like I did which I "probably" mentioned somewhere above.

Superantispyware does a good job on pups and tracking cookies, if you can tolerate their ads to get you to pay for it.

Been using Avira, haven't had any issues with it at all and it's pretty light on my system and does its job. I keep a free version of Malwarebytes and run AdwCleaner for more stuborn infections.
