Nag to install TAP Provider V9

Occasionally I get a repeated nag to install TAP Provider V9. Copy of nag window attached.

I've done a lot of research and see that this is a process that once installed will give me unwanted advertisements. I have not accepted the installation. It also seems that the process originates from some installed freeware or the KMS Activator for MS Office. Various posts recommend running "adwcleaner".
    • I do have a lot of freeware installed but I'm always careful to test these programs on an older computer first and then use the custom installation instead of default.
    • I have MS office installed but have not used KMS Activator,
    • I've run "adwcleaner" and the log file looks pretty clean. The only potential problem in the log file was "***** [ Chromium (and derivatives) ] *****
      Deleted dgjepfldodmdfmdidhhgamnklbdibndi
      "
    • adwcleaner identified one item and it was quarantined. (screen shot attached)
    • After all this the nag still ocassionally appears.

What else can I do to eliminate this nag?

    Hi,

The TAP Provider V9 is often recognized as a virus by security software and is thought to allow other malware onto your PC and is also used by software that cracks Windows and Office...

Try to Use the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool to eradicate the software offline.

Have you ever had or do you have OpenVPN or similar installed?

    See:
What is: TAP Windows Adapter V9 and How to Remove it - Appuals.com

The Tap Windows Adapter V9 is a virtual network interface that provides the functionality needed by various VPN clients to facilitate a VPN conection.
This may be associated with a VPN you have installed, or perhaps leftovers from one you had installed.

You are certainly more knowledgeable than I am. However, I believe that the "TAP Windows Adapter V9" is a legitimate adapter. My nag is tempting me to install "TAP Provider V9" which is different and is related to adware. (probably designed to sound legitimate to fool us into installing it)

I've never had OpenVPN installed but I do have Windscribe VPN installed but only activate it rarely.

Is there any way that I can find the source that originates the nag screen and then delete it?

How can I find the offending software or process that is generating the nag?

Follow the Link Provided to use NBRT, create a Recovery USB drive, Boot the system from it and follow the on screen direction to run a scan.

Norton Power Eraser could also do. But I prefer the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool.

Please read carefully through the link I provided, but note where it says
The Tap Windows Adapter V9 driver is installed in C:/Program Files/Tap-Windows.
    - I think this is only one particular instance of it.

For example, if I look at my Device Manager
Nag to install TAP Provider V9-1.jpg
it seems there is one installed.

I have Windscribe installed- no such nag or issue- that became unreliable in connecting and I now use ProtonVPN.

One way to remove the nag, as per that article, would seem to be to remove every trace of a VPN.

You could try that, then when happy you're not getting this nagging notification, try reinstalling one - and consider allowing it.

I've attempted to use NBRT but it isn't working. I get the error " Error occurred while accessing target disk drive partition". I've written NBRT to both a USB and DVD and booted from both. NBRT seems to load but generates this error after loading. If I let it run, it continually reboots and produces the same error message. I've burned the USB and DVD with both "Rufus" and my old standby "CDBurnerXP" with the same result. I also downloaded a fresh copy of NBRT with the same result.

I searched and found a couple of threads reporting the same issue but no solution.
