    Windows defender

    Good day to all
The windows defender icon has disappeared from the taskbar.
Went to settings then the personalisation tab to select what icons show in the task bar. The windows defender is not there how does one get this back to task bar, It is very handy there to keep an eye on it.
WD is installed the only way to see the WD is to go start and find the tile and open the program from there.
    Any help Please.
    David.

You haven't got a third party AV running?
Does Task Manager show WD running (and the Notification Icon enabled in Startup) when the icon is not in the Taskbar area?

The Defender icon should still show, even with another AV running, it has a lot of other functions besides real-time protection. If it is shown as enabled in Task Manager's Startup tab, then it may just be a temporary glitch, try restarting the PC and see it comes back.

The real-time protection and the Defender icon are two quite separate things. One can run without the other.

The real-time protection is MsMpEng.exe and should be seen in Task Manager's Details tab when it is running. The user interface is MSASCuiL.exe (for versions before Creators update it's MSASCui.exe) and can be found in C:\Program Files\Windows Defender. Manually running it should put the icon on the taskbar.

It should be run automatically, in Creators Update the registry key that does this is in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
There should be a REG_EXPAND_SZ called SecurityHealth with the value:
    %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCuiL.exe

For earlier versions of Windows 10 this had a different name, its was a REG_SZ and contained:
    %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe

I would be concerned that malware may be blocking/removing this. Try a scan with AdwCleaner.

Launch Task Manager by right-clicking on an empty spot on the taskbar and then click Task Manager.

If you see the Task Manager with limited details, click More details button to open the full version of Task Manager.

    Click the Startup tab.

Here, look for Windows Defender notification icon entry. Right-click on it and then click Enable.

Finally, either reboot your PC once, or sign out and sign in again to get the Windows Defender Security Center icon in system tray.

What version of Windows do you have?

Have you checked for malware yet?
