How Do I Start Using Windows Defender & How Good Is It?

I just received notification from Comcast that Norton Online Security will no longer be "free" to Comcast customers. I have never used Windows Defender, but this has convinced me to give it a try. First of all, how good is it? And second, how do I start using it? Does it need to be configured, etc.

My Windows version is 20H2 (OS Build 19042.572)

    Thanks

TexasBandit hello, just uninstall Norton and Windows Defender will notice and prompt you to enable it if it doesn't enable itself. It works well enough that most of us here use it.

I have Comcast too, and have never really cared much for their version of Norton. With all the things going on lately at Symantec I am not surprised at all that Norton is no longer free with Comcast. When you remove Norton, Defender should turn on or at the most it may ask you for a few clicks in the Security Center to get it going. It is best to use the dedicated Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton completely. Defender will not turn on if you have any residual Norton files left behind.

I have experimented with a few third party AVs and always came back to Defender. It works very well and ranks right up there with the big gun popular paid AVs as far as protection and usability/system impact goes. My system runs quick and light, smooth as glass with Windows Security. I also use the Bitdefender Trafficlight extension and Adblock Plus, both work great together with Defender and that is all I need.

You can search online for Andy Ful's Configuredefender tool to harden and enhance Defender. I have never had a need for it personally. There are some tweaks and adjustments you can make to Defender now to set it how you want for PUP detection, Controlled Folder Access/Ransomware, Tamper Protection and other features. It also works in conjunction with Smartscreen. What I like best is how Defender is baked into Windows and does not interfere with anything in the OS.

No, you don't since it's part of Windows.

Thanks for the information folks. I am going to try Windows Defender after I uninstall Norton. I know getting rid of Norton completely can be a mess, but I plan to use their removal tool.

    Thanks Again
