I think that you can turn it off using Autoruns. See screenshot here:

How to Turn On or Off Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows 10

I disabled it but subsequently re-enabled it after reading somewhere that it should be left on even if using a third party firewall/ AV with Defender disabled/ removed.

Defender can be disabled using Winaero Tweaker, also. If Tamper Protection is on, you need to disable it first.

    @Brink

Ok guys. Let's start with this. Here is my Windows 10 version: Win 10 Home 10.0.19041.450 [2004]

As far as I can tell, I already have Windows Defender AV, shut off.

Now the problem is the Windows Defender Firewall. I can disable it, but as soon as I reboot, it turns itself back on.
This is because I can't disable the Windows Defender Firewall Service. It all greyed out.

Apparently this is because of the May 2020 Feature Update. None of the normal solutions work. I've been googling and reading tutorials about the Windows Defender Firewall for days, if not weeks.

I'm about to try Autoruns (the program). I doubt Microsoft over looked that, but we'll see.

/edit Ok, apparently... Windows Defender Firewall doesn't show up under Services, in Autoruns.

Oh, and here's what I see for Virus and Threat Protection... which I assume means the WD AV is OFF and Bitdefender has the con, so to speak.

Autoruns - Options - uncheck Hide Windows entries or change startup via registry:
    Code:
    reg add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\mpssvc" /v "Start" /t REG_DWORD /d "4" /f

@Brink ...for adding to tutorials for Win 10 HOME (2004) folks??

Already did that. Further in the little filters box (top left) I typed in Windows defender and checked each tab.
There was the one you highlighted and.... this little nasty Windows Defender Firewall DRIVER.

Needless to say.. Windows Defender Firewall is disabled, and it's SERVICE is disabled as well.

Does this script apply to all editions of Windows 10 20H2?

If I install this script to permanently disable Windows Defender Firewall/Antivirus, will I have no side effects?

    Thanks

    Bye

After disabling Windows Defender with Autoruns (free), I saw no adverse effects at all.
This works on all versions of Windows 10.

Note: You have to set "Options" as shown here to get the same view I got in post # 14

THEN... you need to uncheck the boxes shown below. This will allow you to disable Windows Defender in "Services".

Just use Defender Control v1.6 - it is one click solution, effective immediately (no restart).
I prefer to disable it completely by stopping services, but it is harder to get it back on.

I have been disabling WD by renaming the executable in ProgramData, but the downside is that WD signature updates fail, leaving messages, and possibly messing up other updates I might need. So I spotted Ghot's suggestion use Autoruns (I have used it many a time in the past), and thought I'd give it a go - so I rebooted to the command line (where one is a real administrator), renamed the WD .exe back, and re-started - to find Tairik's (or is it Okami's) post - so I just downloaded Defender Control (or rather I didn't, as it seems WD blocked me - so I ended up with an open zip file, from which I simply copied the DC folder). I have run it, it seems to work fine, apparently tricking WD into thinking I have AV control by other means. So I then rebooted - WD was still asleep, and my menu toolbar works as snappily as it ever has done.

So I am sorted (for now) , and will happily let WD download signature updates if it really wants to - as long as they don't pile up. Time will tell. Thanks to T (or O), Martin.
