    Defender will not update

    Morning,
My 2 year old laptop with Windows 10 keeps displaying "settings not up to date". When I go to the security page the update has a yellow caution check mark, but when I click on update it just keeps running forever displaying "checking for updates".Any help would be appreciated.

better not to. I get warning when trying to connect to that site...

Can you tell us which Windows version you have, and what kind of error message (if any) do you get when trying to update Defender.

Edit: this could also be a sign of malware.. Get ADWcleaner, and Malwarebytes and check your system

    Hi.

Are you connected to the internet?

You might wish to reboot tour modem and then your router.
After they initialize reboot the PC.

We can all go from there.

    FWIW.

What browser are you using? It won't show if you're using IE11. Try Firefox.

They were serving some questionable software in the past. Could be only advertising, and could be temporary, but this sticks for a while...

    Good tips (from their site)
    - check Windows defender service, if set to auto (and start it),
    - run sfc /scannow,
    - check all updates are in place
    - ..

Couldn't reach that site (OP), make me think some other antimalware is installed on that computer

Disable Windows Defender, and go get Malwarebytes

Thanks to all. The problem seems to have been solved. All the check marks are green.
