Personally, I quit using AVG years ago when it got so bloated, it took 30 seconds to open from the system tray and tried to sell me everything under the sun when it finally did open.
I have used 'security essentials', Defenders predecessor, on my PC's for years with a little added protection from Malwarebytes.
That combination has never let me down and the programs combined are more lightweight than AVG was alone.
If you use that combo, Defender & Malwarebytes, and practice good habits, it should be more than sufficient for 99.99% of your 'Anti-Virus/Malware' needs.
With the bonus that it won't bog down your system, take over critical functions like internet connection, or try to force you to 'upgrade' every 5 seconds by forcing annoying, over large ads in your face.
My $0.02.
YMMV.

Only on one Windows 10 Beta Test, did I have a problem with AVG not running after the upgrade.
Ever since then, with the last few Beta Test versions and now with the final version, AVG is working perfectly.
I get the Bob Rankin newsletter every day and today he asked the question about Windows Security Essentials (Defender) being good enough. Here's the link to the article.
Has Microsoft Security Essentials Improved?
Even MS admitted that their AV software was only marginal at best.
After reading that this morning, I downloaded the latest version of AVG 2015 FREE and installed it here.
It works fine in Windows 10 and does not need any more updating. If for any strange reason, Windows 10 corrupts it, just do a reinstall and select "Repair" Install.
Trusting any ONE program to protect your computer 100% is foolish at best. I use a package of five Anti Malware programs to keep my computer safe, from all forms of Malware. Of all the programs I use, Super Anti Spyware FREE is the only one that will find and remove all the Tracking Cookies as well as most PUP's. It's well worth all the money I 'didn't' spend on it. lol
Be safe and be happy!
P.S.
I don't think anyone would advise only relying on one program. I know I certainly never did.

I have AVG, I have win 10. When I ran AVG today for the first time since the upgrade, it said 'we need to do some modifications to this' click 'yadda yadda' to fix. I did and AVG 'repaired' itself to Win 10 specs. It works great and with zero problems. I have AVG internet Suite 2015 and its NEVER let me down but I still use spybot and Malwarebyres premium to watch for other items, and I have adblocker in my browsers. so a combination of these and I am a happy man.
I have been running AVG internet security (paid for edition) for some while without any problems. When I upgraded to Windows 10 ( fairly early) it was OK for a while and updated OK. About 3 weeks ago, after an update, all the components were red flagged as inactive. I attempted to re-activate using my licence key. It accepted the key as correct but nothing happened. Tried this a few times. Tried AVG support (which should surely be readily available for a paid for Product) but could not get through to their chat line. Again, tried this route on several occasions.
I used Defender for a little while and then I installed Avira Free edition. Then tried (repeatedly) to uninstall AVG. Every time the uninstal process stopped at the Firewall stage implying that I need administrator rights. I am logged on as administrator. Tried support again with the same result as above.
Needless to say I am thoroughly disillusioned with AVG and am not really interested in running their product again but I would like to be able to uninstal it!!!
I too have had problems with my AVG 2015. I hit the brown button and told them what for, their reply was:
Thank you for contacting AVG. I apologize for the inconvenience caused.
As per our conversation I am sending email instructions to re-install AVG.

The reinstallation did work but then I statred having problems with their built in but free version of driver booster. Even though I have the fully paid up PRO AIS, I have to pay extra if I want Driver Booster to work fully - erm NO!
However, it kept telling me that 15 drivers needed updating including my Video software which was brand newly installed the day before.
I complained again and they said reinstall it!!! So I did, same result, 15 drivers that are 'old' - so I uninstalled that section, and left it as a liar!
