Hi everyone. I just bought and received an Apollo Lake laptop (celeron) so I can use in the field.
I have an extra bitdefender license, but I am worried about it slowing down the performance.
Is WD by itself good enough? I do transfer files frequently.
The laptop has 6GB of RAM, but I am worried that bitdefender might tax the apollo lake CPU too much, it's already not a fast computer.
Any suggestions?

The results for Antivirus products are moving targets.
Every test will have:
True positives
True negatives
False positives
False negatives
Accuracy
With new malware appearing on a regular basis there is no best software.
Many of us use the free Windows defender.
Then once is a while run malwarebytes (free edition).
So you can use one always on AV and one manual AV product to provide an extra layer of protection.
Just my rant...
These real-time AV/Firewall products with the exception of Windows Defender will have a performance hit.
If possible, turn off any "idle-time" scans which kick in when your CPU and IO are at their low point.
Scan downloaded singular and RAR files and the like with MBAM or SuperAntispyware on demand.
Watch where you go and enable Private Browsing or Incognito mode, etc. in your browser.
Download from trusted sites.

It depends largely on the activity you do on the device and the websites you visit. If they are not torrent or such and the usual normal sites, then Defender is enough. As mentioned above, you can also use Malwarebytes Free (not resident) for second opinion.

I guess if you ask ten people, you'd get ten different opinions with regard to what security is sufficient and which protection should you choose?
Personally, I've recently switched from Avast Premier (which failed to open after I installed the recent MS Windows 10 Version 1803 (Build 17134.1) update) to Bitdefender Free version for the first time and it seems to be working and updating well in the background and it hasn't slowed down my Toshiba laptop whatsoever and I'm running it alongside Malwarebytes (Premium).

To be honest, I have nothing to add to what has already been said. However, I want to tell you this:
I am an experienced, you might even say advanced Windows and PC user. With that I mean that I know which email attachments to open and which not, which links to click and which not, which sites to go and which not. I do no torrenting, download no pirated software, do not visit (too often) adult websites.
Since the day I started to use first preview versions of Windows 10, October 1st 2014, my only protection has been Windows Defender and Windows Firewall. Not once have I used any other third party AV or firewall applications. For instance, I have never used Malwarebytes.
I've had 0 infections, I've had 0 malware issues.
Short: Yes, Windows 10 built-in, native Windows Defender together with Windows Firewall is all you need.

Just to add my opinion as for years using 3rd party AV (Avast Free) and just recently started using Windows Defender as seems April update 1803 has issues with Avast, so think will just stick with Defender, and less hassle troubleshooting, as I do not torrent, all I do is game, read PC news sites, watch some videos on youtube at times, and such. So far liking it thus far, so far the longest ever used it

Over time you can see how the results vary.
With malware varying over time this is no one product that is always best.

You mention being "in the field". If you are going to have to use mobile data connections then bear in mind that Bitdefender will consume a minimum of 3GB a month of internet data.
- This is not a typo or an experimental error & I confirmed my results directly with BitDefender support.
- The equivalent for Windows Defender and many others is about 30MB a month.
- Bitdefender, unlike the others, does not download updates to malware definitions. It downloads whole replacement modules containing those updated malware definitions.
Bitdefender support said they would email me if they ever changed the way they do things so, if they do, I'll post a correction here.

I find Defender and an occasional offline scan by AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes is fine.
I use the Chrome browser and have installed security add-ins including Defender, AdBlock, HTTPS Everywhere and Malwarebytes (beta).
